Alghero Superyacht Charter

Alghero is one of Sardinia’s most captivating towns, a walled port on the island’s northwest coast where honey-coloured ramparts rise directly from the sea. Distinctively Catalan in character, a legacy of centuries of Aragonese rule, it offers a unique blend of Spanish and Sardinian culture found nowhere else on the island.

Neptune’s Grotto
The spectacular sea caves of Neptune’s Grotto lie some 24 kilometres from Alghero at the foot of Capo Caccia, formed roughly two million years ago and extending nearly four kilometres into the cliff. Visitors normally reach the cave mouth by boat, though a landward route down 654 steps, the Escala del Cabirol, offers dramatic views over the cliffs for those willing to climb back up.

Sardinian Cuisine
Alghero is famous above all for aragosta alla catalana, lobster served simply with tomato and onion in a recipe brought by the town’s original Catalan settlers and found nowhere else in Sardinia in quite this form. Local restaurants pair it with Vermentino di Sardegna, the crisp white grown on the granite hills inland, and the old town’s fish market still supplies much of what lands on the table each evening.

When should we plan an Alghero charter?

May through September offers the most reliable weather, with July and August busiest in the marina and along the ramparts. The maestrale winds that funnel around Capo Caccia can pick up with little warning, so June and September, when the coast is calmer and quieter, are often the most comfortable months for a relaxed stay.

What's the nearest airport to Alghero?

Alghero-Fertilia Airport sits about 10 kilometres from the old town, a 15 to 20 minute drive, and takes a good range of European connections in summer. Guests can also fly into Olbia in the northeast of the island for a wider network of routes, though that means a considerably longer transfer of several hours across Sardinia to reach Alghero itself.

Where's best to anchor around Alghero?

Porto Conte, the wide sheltered bay just north of town, is the standout choice, with good holding and easy access to Neptune’s Grotto and the Capo Caccia cliffs. Closer to the old town, Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto beach both offer clear, shallow water for a lunch stop, while the marina itself sits right beneath the ramparts for an evening ashore.

How many days does Alghero deserve?

Two to three days lets guests properly explore the old town, take a boat trip to Neptune’s Grotto and spend at least one full day at anchor in Porto Conte. It also works well as a northern bookend to a wider Sardinia itinerary, combined easily with time further south around the Costa Smeralda or west along the Coral Riviera.

Is it better to reach Neptune's Grotto by boat or by the stairs?

By boat is easier and more common, a short run from Alghero or Porto Conte straight to the cave mouth without the climb. The landward alternative, the Escala del Cabirol, drops 654 steps down the cliff face of Capo Caccia and is worth doing at least once for the views, though it means a steep climb back up in the heat, better suited to a fit crew than a full family group.
