The bay takes its name, meaning ‘Fox Cove’, from the wild foxes once seen along its shoreline before the coast was developed in the 1960s. Hotel Cala di Volpe, the pink-walled landmark overlooking the bay, opened in 1962 as one of the first hotels built by the Aga Khan’s Consorzio Costa Smeralda, designed by the French architect Jacques Couelle, who is said to have lain on the raw hillside to feel its shape before drawing a single plan. The result, all irregular walls and hand-finished stone, set the architectural tone that still defines the Costa Smeralda today.

When's the best time to charter at Cala di Volpe?

June through September is peak season on the Costa Smeralda, with July and August the busiest and most expensive both at anchor and ashore. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup fills nearby Porto Cervo’s marina each September, so guests wanting a quieter, less crowded stay in the bay itself tend to favour June or early July instead.

What's the closest airport to Cala di Volpe?

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is roughly 27 kilometres away, around 35 to 40 minutes by road, and the main gateway for the whole northeastern coast in summer with direct flights from across Europe. Guests can also arrive by helicopter directly to the hotel or a nearby pad, a popular option for a fast transfer straight from the airport without the drive.

Where's good to anchor near Cala di Volpe?
