Cala di Volpe Superyacht Charter

Cala di Volpe is one of the most glamorous anchorages on Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, a beautiful bay of emerald water and sculpted granite set at the heart of the island’s most exclusive coast. Named after the fox-shaped inlet it occupies, it has long been a favourite of the international yachting set.

The bay is dominated by its iconic luxury hotel, a landmark of Mediterranean glamour, yet the natural setting remains the true draw. Clear, shallow turquoise water laps against pink granite headlands and pine-fringed shores, creating some of the most beautiful swimming and anchoring in the region.

From here the celebrated marina of Porto Cervo and the pristine La Maddalena archipelago are within easy reach, along with a string of exquisite beaches and secluded coves. The surrounding waters are protected and wonderfully clear, ideal for swimming, snorkelling and days spent at anchor.

With its blend of natural beauty and legendary exclusivity, Cala di Volpe is the essence of the Costa Smeralda. It offers yacht guests an idyllic and glamorous setting in which to enjoy the very finest of Sardinian coastal life.

Cala di Volpe Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Cala di Volpe, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter at Cala di Volpe?

June through September is peak season on the Costa Smeralda, with July and August the busiest and most expensive both at anchor and ashore. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup fills nearby Porto Cervo’s marina each September, so guests wanting a quieter, less crowded stay in the bay itself tend to favour June or early July instead.

What's the closest airport to Cala di Volpe?

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is roughly 27 kilometres away, around 35 to 40 minutes by road, and the main gateway for the whole northeastern coast in summer with direct flights from across Europe. Guests can also arrive by helicopter directly to the hotel or a nearby pad, a popular option for a fast transfer straight from the airport without the drive.

Where's good to anchor near Cala di Volpe?

The bay itself, right off the beach below the hotel, is the obvious choice, with clear, sheltered water and a front-row view of the Costa Smeralda’s most photographed stretch of coast. Petra Bianca and Petra Niedda just along the shore offer quieter alternatives with fewer boats, while Golfo di Cugnana to the south gives a more enclosed option in unsettled weather.

How many days should we spend at Cala di Volpe?

One or two nights suits most itineraries, since Cala di Volpe works best as a glamorous stop within a wider Costa Smeralda charter rather than a week-long base on its own. Most guests combine it with time in Porto Cervo, a day trip to the La Maddalena archipelago further north, and a run south toward Olbia or the rest of Sardinia’s east coast.

Is it true the hotel's architect designed it by lying on the ground?

That’s the story told about Jacques Couelle, the French architect the Aga Khan commissioned in the early 1960s, who is said to have studied the raw hillside by lying on it to feel its contours before drawing a single line. Whether entirely literal or part legend, the result matches the tale: irregular, hand-finished walls that follow the land rather than impose a grid on it, unlike almost any other resort built on this coast since.
