Montserrat Superyacht Charter

Montserrat is one of the most unusual and unspoilt islands in the eastern Caribbean, a lush and beautiful isle known as the Emerald Isle for its Irish heritage and vivid green hills. Peaceful, dramatic and rarely visited, it offers a rare and fascinating destination shaped by both natural beauty and volcanic power.

The island is famous for its dramatic Soufrière Hills volcano, whose eruptions in the 1990s buried the former capital of Plymouth, creating a modern-day Pompeii that can be viewed from the sea and from designated observation points. This extraordinary landscape gives Montserrat a haunting and unique character.

Beyond the volcanic zone, the north of the island remains lush and green, with beautiful hills, black-sand beaches and clear water rich in marine life. Its unspoilt reefs offer superb diving and snorkelling, while quiet anchorages provide a profound sense of peace.

Ashore, the island offers a warm welcome, a distinctive culture blending Irish and Caribbean roots, and a genuine sense of tranquillity far from any crowds. Its blend of drama and charm is compelling.

With its green hills, dramatic volcano and unspoilt tranquillity, Montserrat is a fascinating jewel of the Caribbean. Guests can view a remarkable volcanic landscape, dive pristine reefs and enjoy the peaceful, distinctive charm of this beautiful Emerald Isle.

Montserrat Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Montserrat, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
What time of year is best for a Montserrat charter?

Montserrat is a dry-season destination, best from December to April, when the Caribbean weather is settled and the trade winds steady. This matches the wider Leeward Islands season. The green hills are at their most vivid after the autumn rains, in December and January.

How do you actually get to Montserrat by yacht?

Montserrat has no international airport for large aircraft. Most guests arrive via Antigua (ANU), then take the short ferry or a light flight, or simply cruise across, as Montserrat lies around 30 nautical miles southwest of Antigua. It is an easy sail as part of a Leeward Islands itinerary.

Which anchorages are worth visiting around Montserrat?

Little Bay in the northwest is the main anchorage and point of entry. Rendezvous Bay, the island’s only white-sand beach, and Woodlands Bay nearby offer quiet swimming and snorkelling. The south of the island falls within a maritime exclusion zone around the volcano and must not be entered.

How long do you need to explore Montserrat?

A day or two is enough to take in Montserrat’s highlights: the view of Plymouth from the sea, a dive on the reefs and time on the northern beaches. It works best as a distinctive stop within a wider Leeward Islands cruise from Antigua, Guadeloupe or St Kitts.

Is it safe to sail near Montserrat's volcano?

Yes, provided the maritime exclusion zone around the Soufrière Hills is respected. The zone is clearly marked and enforced, and viewing the buried former capital of Plymouth from its edge is the standard, sanctioned way to take in the volcano’s power. Local authorities publish the current alert level and zone boundaries.
