Saint Croix has the kind of waterfront that suits a classic yacht: the Christiansted boardwalk is built at water level, the Danish-era fort has cannons facing the harbour mouth, and the chandlery on the quayside has been supplying visiting yachts for longer than anyone can reliably recall. A traditionally built sloop or ketch arriving here draws genuine interest rather than the polite indifference that overtakes modern marinas when another fibreglass hull enters the slip.
The classic charter fleet available in the Caribbean numbers around eight vessels of genuine provenance, and Saint Croix’s 40-mile separation from the main BVI circuit means that reaching it is its own reward. The passage from Saint John or Tortola takes the better part of a day in 15 knots of trade wind, and the approach to Christiansted Harbour past the reef line is a proper piece of pilotage that rewards preparation.
Weekly rates for classic charter yachts in the USVI and Caribbean range from 50,000 to 120,000 euros. The advance provisioning allowance of 30 percent covers offshore provisioning, fuel for engine-assisted passages and modest USVI port fees. Classic vessels tend to carry smaller fuel loads and generate less mechanical heat than modern motor yachts, making the Caribbean passages more comfortable in the trade-wind heat of February and March.
From Christiansted the classic yacht itinerary runs east to Buck Island for the morning, south along the shore to the Teague Bay anchorage for lunch, and then coastal to the Frederiksted roadstead for the evening. The following morning the vessel can press south toward Vieques in Puerto Rico, an offshore passage that defines the spirit of a classic charter: committed, navigated by wind and current, and entirely at the mercy of the weather forecast.
