The season runs April to October, with July and August bringing the busiest City Walls, the fullest harbour and premium pricing on any berth close to the Old Town. May, June and September keep the water warm enough for swimming off Lokrum while significantly easing the crowds on the walls and along Stradun, and are generally the better months for a first visit.
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), near Čilipi, sits about 15.5 kilometres south of the Old Town, roughly a thirty-minute transfer by road along the coast to Gruž Harbour. It’s the main international gateway for southern Dalmatia, with summer schedules bringing far more direct routes than the shoulder season, and enough capacity that many charters both start and end guest changeovers here rather than routing everyone through Split.
Gruž Harbour, northwest of the Old Town, is the practical base for provisioning and crew changes, while Cavtat, closer to the airport, offers a quieter marina alternative with its own small old town. For overnight stops with more breathing room than the city itself, Šipan, Koločep and Lopud in the Elaphiti Islands are all within an hour’s sail and considerably calmer in peak season.
Two to three days covers the City Walls, Stradun and a cable car trip to Mount Srđ at an unrushed pace, with a day left over for Lokrum. Adding a visit to the Elaphiti Islands, particularly Lopud for its beach, extends that comfortably to four or five days, and Dubrovnik works equally well as the start or end point of a longer Dalmatian itinerary.
Yes, the Old Town served as the primary filming location for King’s Landing throughout the series, and several spots, including the City Walls, Fort Lovrijenac and the steps near St Dominic Street, are still routinely pointed out by guides and marked on self-guided walking maps. It has brought a steady stream of fans to the city, which is one more reason to time a walk on the walls for early morning, before both the heat and the tour groups arrive.
