When's the best time to sail to Santorini?

Late April through June and September into October bring warm weather without the peak-season crowds that fill Oia’s clifftop paths each evening in July and August. The meltemi wind can affect the approach and departure in mid-summer, occasionally delaying ferry and tender schedules, so a flexible itinerary with a day or two of buffer either side of a Santorini stop is worth building in during those months.

What's the nearest airport to Santorini?

Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR) sits on the island’s eastern side, with direct seasonal flights from Athens and several European cities in summer. For charters starting elsewhere in the Cyclades, Mykonos International Airport (JMK) is a common alternative gateway, with the two islands roughly a two-and-a-half to three-hour sail apart depending on conditions.

Can you anchor a yacht directly in the Santorini caldera?

Not easily. The caldera drops to several hundred metres within a short distance of the cliffs, so most yachts avoid trying to anchor there and instead pick up a mooring or head to Vlychada Marina on the southern coast, the island’s only proper working harbour. Smaller boats and tenders sometimes use Ammoudi Bay below Oia, though space there is limited and mainly used by local fishing boats.

How many days should we spend at Santorini?

One or two nights is typically enough to see Oia and Fira, dive or swim at the hot springs off Nea Kameni, and visit a caldera-view winery without rushing. Because anchoring options are limited compared with other Cyclades islands, most charters treat Santorini as a highlight stop within a longer Cyclades itinerary rather than a base for the whole trip.

Is the Santorini volcano still active?

Yes, though it’s considered dormant rather than a daily concern. Nea Kameni, the islet at the centre of the caldera, last erupted in 1950 and is monitored continuously by Greek and international geologists for changes in activity. Boat trips to the crater and the nearby hot springs run throughout the season without restriction, and the volcano’s activity has no bearing on the safety of a typical charter itinerary around the island.
