Hong Kong Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Hong Kong, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
What's the best time of year to charter around Hong Kong?

October through December brings Hong Kong’s most comfortable sailing weather, with lower humidity, clearer skies and a reliable northeast monsoon breeze. The wet season runs roughly May to September and brings the highest typhoon risk, particularly August and September, when the Hong Kong Observatory issues its most warning signals. Spring, in March and April, is milder but hazier, so most charter captains favour autumn.

How do we get to a yacht in Hong Kong from the airport?

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) sits on the reclaimed island of Chek Lap Kok, around 30 kilometres from the harbour and easily reached by the Airport Express train in about 24 minutes. Most charters join or leave a yacht at one of the marinas around Victoria Harbour or in Sai Kung, both under an hour from the terminal by taxi or private transfer.

Which bays are best for an overnight stop around Hong Kong?

Hebe Haven and the wider Sai Kung waters, known locally as Hong Kong’s back garden, offer the most reliable shelter and a cluster of yacht clubs and seafood restaurants ashore. Repulse Bay and Clearwater Bay suit a calmer daytime stop with swimming, while Aberdeen’s typhoon shelter, crowded with houseboats and fishing junks, gives a more atmospheric, working-harbour alternative close to the city.

How many days make sense for a Hong Kong charter?

Three to four days let guests combine a night in Victoria Harbour beneath the skyline with time exploring the outlying islands and the quieter anchorages around Sai Kung. Hong Kong also works well as a short add-on to a longer Southeast Asian itinerary, since its compact waters mean even a brief stop can take in the city, at least one island and a proper swim stop.

What makes Hong Kong's harbour unique for a charter guest?

The Star Ferry has crossed Victoria Harbour since 1888, and its green-and-white boats still shuttle between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon in around ten minutes, working traffic that yachts share with container ships, cargo junks and pleasure craft alike. Hong Kong also holds the Guinness World Record for the city with the most buildings over 150 metres tall, giving the harbour a genuinely unmatched sense of scale after dark.
