Late spring and early autumn bring warm, settled weather without August’s crowds, when the village’s narrow lanes and waterfront trattorias can feel genuinely quiet. July and August are busiest, both with cruising traffic in the gulf and day-trippers arriving by ferry from La Spezia, so anchoring early in the day is worth planning for in peak season.
Pisa International Airport (PSA) and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo (GOA) are both roughly 90km away and the most practical options, each around ninety minutes from the village by car or transfer. Many guests fly into one and take a scenic drive or rail connection through La Spezia, which sits at the head of the same gulf just a short cruise away.
The western coves of Palmaria Island, directly across the narrow channel from the village, offer the clearest water and the most shelter, with Byron’s Grotto beneath the church of San Pietro a striking spot for a swim stop. The hamlets of Le Grazie and Fezzano, tucked into the gulf just north of the village, give a quieter, more local alternative.
A day and a night is enough to walk the village, climb to the castle and swim off Palmaria, but two or three days let you add a crossing to the Cinque Terre or a lazy morning exploring the sea caves further afield. It also pairs naturally with a stop in La Spezia at the other end of the same gulf.
Only rarely. Tino is a restricted military area closed to the public for most of the year, opening for just a few days each September, usually the 13th to 15th, for the Festival of San Venerio, when boat trips from Portovenere and La Spezia run to the island’s monastery ruins and lighthouse. Outside those dates it can only be admired from the water.
