Portovenere Superyacht Charter

Portovenere is one of the most beautiful villages on the Italian Riviera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site set at the entrance to the Gulf of Poets on the eastern Ligurian coast. Its row of tall, colourful houses rising above the harbour and its dramatic clifftop church create one of the most photographed scenes in Italy.

Steeped in history and legend, the village is crowned by the Doria Castle and the striking church of San Pietro, which stands on a rocky promontory lashed by the sea. Narrow medieval lanes climb behind the waterfront, lined with trattorias serving the seafood and pesto for which Liguria is famous.

Just offshore lie the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, offering clear water, sea caves and sheltered anchorages. The surrounding Gulf of Poets, so named for the writers it inspired, is a place of exceptional beauty, with the Cinque Terre a short cruise along the coast.

With its dramatic setting, rich history and romantic atmosphere, Portovenere is a highlight of any Ligurian cruise. Guests can explore its ancient streets, anchor beneath its clifftop church and enjoy some of the finest scenery on the Italian coast.

Portovenere Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Portovenere, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
What's the best season for a Portovenere charter?

Late spring and early autumn bring warm, settled weather without August’s crowds, when the village’s narrow lanes and waterfront trattorias can feel genuinely quiet. July and August are busiest, both with cruising traffic in the gulf and day-trippers arriving by ferry from La Spezia, so anchoring early in the day is worth planning for in peak season.

How do you reach a charter starting from Portovenere?

Pisa International Airport (PSA) and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo (GOA) are both roughly 90km away and the most practical options, each around ninety minutes from the village by car or transfer. Many guests fly into one and take a scenic drive or rail connection through La Spezia, which sits at the head of the same gulf just a short cruise away.

Where are the best anchorages around Portovenere?

The western coves of Palmaria Island, directly across the narrow channel from the village, offer the clearest water and the most shelter, with Byron’s Grotto beneath the church of San Pietro a striking spot for a swim stop. The hamlets of Le Grazie and Fezzano, tucked into the gulf just north of the village, give a quieter, more local alternative.

How long should we spend at Portovenere?

A day and a night is enough to walk the village, climb to the castle and swim off Palmaria, but two or three days let you add a crossing to the Cinque Terre or a lazy morning exploring the sea caves further afield. It also pairs naturally with a stop in La Spezia at the other end of the same gulf.

Can you actually visit Tino Island near Portovenere?

Only rarely. Tino is a restricted military area closed to the public for most of the year, opening for just a few days each September, usually the 13th to 15th, for the Festival of San Venerio, when boat trips from Portovenere and La Spezia run to the island’s monastery ruins and lighthouse. Outside those dates it can only be admired from the water.
