Late spring and early autumn, roughly May, June and September, give the clearest water and the mildest walking weather on the Migliara and Monte Solaro trails, without July and August’s crowds pressing through Piazza Vittoria and the Grotta Azzurra queue. Winter sees many of the smaller museums and gardens close, so April to October remains the realistic charter window.
There’s no airport on Capri itself, so guests fly into Naples Capodichino (NAP) and either take a hydrofoil across the bay to Marina Grande, roughly 40 minutes by sea, or join the yacht directly if it’s already cruising the Bay of Naples. From Marina Grande, Anacapri itself sits a further bus or taxi ride up the hillside, above the harbour.
The Grotta Azzurra and neighbouring Cala del Rio, on Anacapri’s western coast, are the main draws, though the grotto itself only admits small rowing boats through its low entrance. Further round, Grotta Bianca and the water off the Punta Carena lighthouse offer calmer, less crowded alternatives for a swim stop away from the main Blue Grotto queue.
Half a day covers the essentials, the Blue Grotto by rowing boat, a walk through Piazza Vittoria and up to the Church of San Michele, but a full day allows time for the Migliara trail or the chairlift to Monte Solaro as well. Most charters combine it with Capri town and the Faraglioni on the same call rather than anchoring twice.
Largely, though embellished for effect. Axel Munthe, a Swedish physician, bought the ruined chapel on the site in 1887 and spent much of his life building the villa around it, drawing on local legend rather than confirmed evidence that it once held a Roman-era retreat. His 1929 memoir The Story of San Michele became an international bestseller and has remained in print ever since.
