La Maddalena Superyacht Charter

The La Maddalena archipelago is one of the finest cruising grounds in the Mediterranean, a protected national park of pink granite islands, dazzling white beaches and turquoise lagoons scattered off the northeast coast of Sardinia. Pristine and wonderfully unspoilt, it is the highlight of any northern Sardinian cruise.

Comprising more than sixty islands and islets, the archipelago offers an endless choice of sheltered anchorages, hidden coves and crystal-clear water. Famous spots such as the pink sands of Budelli and the shallow lagoons of Spargi and Santa Maria rank among the most beautiful natural sights in the entire Mediterranean.

As a national marine park, the archipelago is carefully protected, preserving its clear waters, healthy sea life and dramatic granite landscapes. Only a short passage from the glamour of the Costa Smeralda, it offers a complete contrast in pure, natural beauty.

With its protected islands, brilliant water and countless anchorages, La Maddalena is a paradise for yacht guests. It offers days of swimming, snorkelling and exploration among some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery in the Mediterranean.

From the glamour of nearby Porto Cervo to the quiet perfection of a hidden lagoon, the archipelago offers a remarkable range of experiences within a compact and beautiful area that rewards several days of unhurried exploration.

La Maddalena Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in La Maddalena, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When is the best time to cruise the La Maddalena archipelago?

The archipelago is at its best from June to September, when the water is warmest and calmest for swimming and snorkelling in the lagoons. July and August bring the heaviest boat traffic in signature spots like Cala Corsara and Spiaggia Rosa, so early morning or late afternoon visits avoid the crowds. Spring and early autumn stay pleasant too, with quieter anchorages and a better chance of finding a private cove to yourself.

How do you get to La Maddalena, since it has no airport of its own?

The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB), roughly an hour’s drive from Palau, the mainland town where car ferries cross the narrow strait to La Maddalena in about 15 to 20 minutes. Most charter guests skip that crossing entirely and simply sail or tender directly into the archipelago from Porto Cervo, Portisco or Olbia, since the whole park lies within easy reach of the Costa Smeralda’s marinas.

Which anchorages inside the park are worth prioritising?

Cala Corsara on Spargi and Cala Coticcio on Caprera, nicknamed locally as ‘Tahiti’ for its startling clarity, are the two most sought-after stops, though both fill quickly in August and are best visited early. Porto Palma, also on Caprera, offers a wider and calmer bay for an overnight stop, while Cala Lunga on Razzoli and Cala Santa Maria give a quieter, less-visited alternative most days of the week.

How many days should a charter allow for the archipelago?

Two to three days is typically enough to see the highlights, Spargi, Caprera and Budelli by boat, plus an afternoon ashore in La Maddalena town, though the park rewards a slower pace if the itinerary allows it. Guests combining it with Porto Cervo or the wider Costa Smeralda often treat it as a standalone two-day detour from a longer northern Sardinia charter, since almost everything worth seeing sits within a few hours’ sail of Palau.

Is it true Napoleon's very first battle was fought here?

Yes, in February 1793, a young artillery officer named Napoleon Bonaparte took part in a failed French attempt to seize La Maddalena from Sardinian defenders, in what historians generally count as his first taste of combat. The island’s position in the Strait of Bonifacio later drew Nelson’s British fleet too, used as a base against the French. Villa Webber in the town later held Mussolini briefly in 1943, after his arrest.
