Samoa Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Samoa, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to sail to Samoa?

The dry season from May to October brings the most settled weather and lighter winds, making it the preferred window for a charter. November through April is Samoa’s wetter, cyclone-prone season, with the risk of tropical systems increasing toward the New Year, so guests planning a visit during that period should build extra flexibility into their itinerary.

How do you get to Samoa for a yacht charter?

Faleolo International Airport (APW), around 35 kilometres west of Apia on Upolu, is Samoa’s main gateway, with connections through Auckland, Sydney, Nadi and neighbouring American Samoa. A short domestic flight or the inter-island ferry then links Upolu to Savai’i, useful for a charter that plans to visit both islands rather than staying on Upolu alone.

Where are the best anchorages in Samoa?

Apia Harbour is the natural base on Upolu, close to provisioning and the island’s main sights, while the Aleipata coast to the east and Manono Island to the west both offer quieter, more sheltered stops. On Savai’i, Asau Harbour in the north-west gives easy access to the Saleaula lava fields and the island’s rainforest interior.

How many days should a Samoa charter allow?

Five to seven days is enough to properly cover both islands, including a night or two on Savai’i, which is often skipped by shorter land-based trips. Upolu alone, with its waterfalls, To Sua Ocean Trench and south-coast beaches, can comfortably fill three or four days if Savai’i isn’t part of the plan.

Is there a good time to combine a Samoa charter with a local festival?

Late August into early September is an excellent window, timed to Samoa’s flagship cultural festival, held from 30 August to 5 September in 2026 in Apia. Long known as the Teuila Festival, it was renamed the Measina Festival this year after a 35-year run under its previous name, and still brings traditional dance, longboat races, a kilikiti cricket tournament and the Miss Samoa pageant to the capital’s waterfront.
