Hydra is one of the great sailing destinations of the Saronic Gulf, combining a dramatic natural harbour, consistent summer wind, and proximity to Athens into an itinerary that works equally well for a short weekend break or a full week under sail. The island sits at the junction of the inner Saronic and the open approach to the Argolic Gulf, giving sailing yachts a choice of directions from the same anchorage.
The Greek sailing fleet of around 8 charter yachts operates throughout these waters, from 18-metre crewed monohulls to 50-metre sailing superyachts. Wind in the Saronic is generally from the north-west through summer, building each afternoon and easing overnight, which gives sailing days a natural structure. Weekly charter rates for sailing yachts in Greece range from around 50,000 euros to 175,000 euros for the larger crewed sailing vessels.
An advance provisioning allowance of approximately 30 percent covers fuel, provisions, and port dues. Hydra has a long connection with the sea and with the people who have been drawn to it for reasons other than tourism: Leonard Cohen’s house is visible from the water, a plain white building above the harbour that has become its own landmark.
June and September are the preferred months for sailing the Saronic. The meltemi is less intense than in the open Aegean, making this circuit accessible to experienced charterers and those trying extended crewed charter for the first time.
