China Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in China, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When is the best time to charter along the China coast?

It depends heavily on where: the southern coast around Hainan and Guangdong is warm enough to sail year-round but sits within the typhoon belt from roughly July to October, while the central and northern coast around Shanghai and Qingdao is best in spring and autumn, avoiding both the summer typhoon risk and the cold, often foggy winters further north. Many charters split time between regions to work around this.

How do we get to a China charter, and what about visas?

Shanghai Pudong, Qingdao Jiaodong and Xiamen Gaoqi all have direct international connections, while Hong Kong is the usual gateway for the southern coast. Visa rules vary by nationality and entry point: several coastal cities including Shanghai now offer visa-free transit of up to several days for eligible passport holders, though most itineraries still require a standard Chinese visa arranged in advance, so it is worth confirming requirements for your specific nationality and route early.

Which marinas and anchorages are best for a first China charter?

Qingdao’s Olympic Sailing Center, built for the 2008 Games, is the most established marina on the northern coast, while Xiamen Marina and Zhuhai’s Huafa & CP Bay Marina offer good, modern facilities further south, both within easy reach of Hong Kong. Dalian’s Xinghai Bay Marina rounds out the network in the north-east, though berths and services are still far less dense here than in the established marinas of the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

How many days make sense for a China coastal charter?

Seven to ten days suit a focused single-region itinerary, whether that’s Shanghai and the Zhoushan Archipelago, or Xiamen, Quanzhou and the Fujian coast. Because China’s coastline runs for thousands of kilometres and the yachting infrastructure between regions is still developing, most guests choose one area rather than attempting to cover the whole country, and a shore-based extension to inland sights such as Beijing or Xi’an often bookends the trip.

Are there special customs requirements for bringing a foreign yacht into China?

Yes, foreign-flagged yachts have historically needed to work through Penavico, the state shipping agency, submitting documents at least three working days ahead and, at some ports, a refundable deposit against the vessel’s value, with a maximum stay of 183 days a year. Procedures are being simplified as new dedicated yacht ports like Sanya’s Qingshui Bay open, but requirements still vary by port, so confirming the current process well ahead of arrival is essential.
