November through April is the classic dry season, with warm days, lower humidity and the lowest typhoon risk, making it the most reliable window for a charter. The wet season runs roughly May to October, peaking with typhoon risk from July to October, though Hainan’s water stays warm enough to swim in year-round even when a charter itinerary needs to work around storm forecasts.
Sanya Phoenix International Airport and Haikou Meilan International Airport both take direct flights from major Asian hubs and a growing number of long-haul routes. Hainan also runs its own enhanced entry policy: passport holders from more than 60 eligible countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, provided they arrive on a direct flight into Hainan with a confirmed return ticket and itinerary, though the stay is then confined to the island itself.
Sanya Serenity Marina and Sanya VTY Yacht Services are the two established full-service marinas on the south coast, both offering berths for yachts up to 60 metres, while Clearwater Bay Marina, further along the coast, holds a Five Gold Anchors rating. Haikou, on the north coast, has its own smaller marinas including Haikou City Marina and the Visun Royal Yacht Club, useful for a Hainan circuit that takes in both ends of the island.
Five to seven days cover Sanya’s south coast comfortably, including time on the water off Wuzhizhou Island, a beach day at Yalong or Haitang Bay and an inland excursion to Wuzhishan’s rainforest. Extending to ten days allows a fuller circuit taking in Haikou and the Boao Forum’s home town on the east coast, though most charter guests treat Hainan as a focused, beach-and-diving-led week rather than an island-wide itinerary.
It has become significantly easier. In July 2026, Sanya’s Qingshui Bay port area opened as a dedicated international yacht clearance facility, and that September the first outbound clearance under the new system was completed there, a genuine milestone after years of foreign yachts routing through slower, cargo-focused ports. The Sanya border inspection station has since introduced pre-screened documentation and streamlined procedures specifically for international leisure vessels.
