Delos Superyacht Charter

Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece, a small uninhabited island at the very heart of the Cyclades that was, in antiquity, one of the most sacred places in the ancient world. Believed to be the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis, it offers an extraordinary journey into the classical past.

Once a thriving religious and commercial centre, the entire island is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an open-air museum of temples, mosaics, statues and the famous Terrace of the Lions. Wandering its ancient streets, with the sea shimmering all around, is a moving and unforgettable experience.

Lying just off the coast of glamorous Mykonos, Delos is easily reached and forms an essential contrast to the lively energy of its neighbour. The surrounding waters are clear and beautiful, and the sacred island rises serene and timeless from the Aegean.

With its extraordinary history, sacred atmosphere and remarkable ruins, Delos is a highlight of any Cyclades cruise. Guests can explore one of the great archaeological treasures of the ancient world, set against the sparkling blue of the Aegean Sea.

Delos Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Delos, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to visit Delos by yacht?

April through October covers the site’s normal opening season, with May, June and September offering the most comfortable temperatures for walking the largely shadeless ruins. Midsummer visits are best timed for early morning, both to beat the heat and the crowds arriving on scheduled excursion boats from Mykonos later in the day.

What's the nearest airport for a Delos visit?

Mykonos (JMK) is the nearest airport, since Delos itself has no airstrip and can only be reached by boat. Most charters based in Mykonos treat Delos as a half or full day excursion, anchoring nearby rather than staying overnight on or near the sacred island, before returning to Mykonos or a neighbouring anchorage for the night.

Where do yachts anchor for a visit to Delos?

Since no overnight stay is permitted on Delos itself, yachts typically anchor off neighbouring Rhenia, in bays such as Ambelia or Stena, and tender across to the site jetty for the day. Rhenia’s deeply indented coast offers shelter from the swell whichever way the wind is blowing, making it a reliably comfortable overnight base.

How long should we spend at Delos?

Half a day is usually enough to walk the main sanctuary, the Terrace of the Lions and the Theatre Quarter with a guide, though keen history buffs can easily fill a full day. Most charters pair the visit with lunch or an afternoon swim off Rhenia once the site closes for the day.

Is it true no one was allowed to be born or die on Delos?

Yes. From 426 BC, Athens decreed the island so sacred that pregnant women and the dying had to be evacuated to nearby Rhenia, and every existing grave was exhumed and moved there too. Some of those ancient grave markers can still be seen along Rhenia’s southern shoreline today, a rare physical trace of the decree.
