Athens Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Athens, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to combine Athens with a yacht charter?

April through October works for the sailing season, though Athens itself is a year-round city. Summer brings intense heat and the Acropolis’s daily visitor cap fills quickest in July and August, so booking timed entry well ahead matters more then. Many guests prefer starting or ending a charter in Athens during the shoulder months of May or late September, when the city is markedly cooler for sightseeing.

How do you get to Athens for a charter?

Athens International Airport (ATH), in Spata, sits about 27 kilometres east of the city centre, roughly a 45-minute drive depending on traffic. Alimos Marina, the main charter base, is on the opposite side of the city, close to the southern coastal suburbs, so guests flying in typically transfer directly to the marina rather than into the centre first if time is limited.

Where do yachts anchor or berth around Athens?

Alimos Marina is the largest and most commonly used charter base, with around 1,100 berths and facilities to match. Flisvos and Vouliagmeni Marinas offer smaller, more boutique alternatives slightly further along the coast. For a day out on the water without departing the mainland, Lagonisi Bay and the anchorage off Cape Sounion, beneath the Temple of Poseidon, are popular for an afternoon swim stop.

How many days should we spend in Athens before or after a charter?

Two to three days covers the Acropolis, its museum, and a couple of the historic neighbourhoods without feeling rushed. Athens works best as a bookend to a charter rather than the main event: most guests fly in, spend a few days exploring the city, then depart by yacht for the Saronic Gulf or the Cyclades, or do the reverse and finish their trip with time in the capital.

Do you need to book Acropolis tickets in advance?

Yes, and it’s worth doing early. Since September 2023, the Acropolis has capped daily visitors at 20,000, with entry distributed across timed morning and afternoon slots, roughly 3,000 in the 8am hour alone. Turning up without a reservation, especially in peak season, risks being turned away or facing a long wait, so booking a slot before you arrive is now standard practice rather than a precaution.
