Misool Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Misool, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When should we plan a charter around Misool?

Misool follows the wider Raja Ampat pattern: the reliable diving and cruising season runs roughly September through June, with July and August the one period worth avoiding, when the southeast monsoon brings choppier seas and murkier water. Because Misool sits in the far south of the archipelago, a longer weather window either side of that gives more flexibility for the crossing down from Sorong or Waisai.

How do we actually reach Misool by yacht?

Guests typically fly into Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) in Sorong, then continue by sea, either a direct private tender south, roughly five hours to the Misool Eco Resort area, or a shorter hop to Waisai followed by a longer run south through the archipelago. Given the distance involved, most charters treat Misool as the southern anchor of a longer Raja Ampat itinerary rather than a standalone stop.

Where should we anchor around Misool?

Batbitim Island and the surrounding Boo Islands offer sheltered, current-protected anchorage close to some of Misool’s best-known dive sites, while Balbulol lagoon further east makes for a dramatic, walled-in overnight stop. Yellu village, the main local settlement, is worth a stop of its own for provisioning and a genuine look at everyday life around the reserve.

How long should we allow for Misool?

Three to four full days covers Misool’s core sites, Boo Window, Magic Mountain and the Karawapop lagoon among them, though the distance from Sorong means most guests build in six days or more once travel and a weather buffer are included. Dedicated Misool-focused itineraries commonly run nine to fourteen nights when combined with the wider southern reaches of the archipelago.

Is it true Misool used to be a shark-finning camp?

Yes. The site that is now the Misool Eco Resort was a recently abandoned shark-finning operation on Batbitim Island when its founders first dived there in 2005. Within two years the surrounding waters had been declared Raja Ampat’s first no-take marine reserve, and a registered conservation foundation followed in 2011. Ranger patrols now protect around 300,000 acres, and shark sightings on a typical dive here are dramatically higher than they were two decades ago.
