Hamptons Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Hamptons, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter around the Hamptons?

Late June through Labor Day is peak season, when the social calendar, restaurant reservations and mooring space are all at their most competitive. Many charter guests prefer arriving in the two or three weeks either side of that window, when water temperatures are still warm, the villages are quieter, and marina staff have more flexibility. Wine country events at Wölffer Estate and the North Fork wineries also run later into September, giving a good reason to extend a visit.

What's the best way to reach the Hamptons by air?

East Hampton Airport (HTO) sits about two miles from the village and is the closest option, though seasonal noise restrictions limit its hours. Francis S. Gabreski Airport (FOK) in Westhampton Beach, roughly 25 miles west, handles larger private aircraft without those restrictions and is the preferred choice for jet charters. Guests connecting through New York City typically fly into JFK or LaGuardia and drive out, a trip that can take two to three hours depending on Hamptons-bound summer traffic.

Which harbors offer the best shelter for a yacht?

Sag Harbor is the most protected and central option, with a historic waterfront and easy walking access to restaurants and shops. Three Mile Harbor, closer to East Hampton village, is popular with local boaters and offers good holding ground. Montauk Harbor, further east, puts guests closer to Ditch Plains and Montauk Point but is more exposed to weather rolling in off the open Atlantic.

How many days make sense for a Hamptons charter?

Three to five days is typical, enough time to split between Sag Harbor’s village life, East Hampton’s beaches, and a day trip out to Montauk for the lighthouse and surf beaches. Guests who want to add wine tasting on the North Fork, across Peconic Bay, or a stop in Shelter Island usually extend to a full week to cover the extra distance comfortably.

Is it really faster to arrive by yacht than by car?

Often, yes. Route 27, the main road connecting the Hamptons to New York City, regularly backs up for hours on summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings as weekenders funnel through the same two-lane stretch. Arriving by water bypasses that entirely, and most of the region’s harbors, Sag Harbor and Three Mile Harbor especially, sit within walking distance of the village centers, so a yacht can also replace much of the local driving once you’re there.
