November through April brings the driest, calmest conditions, with January to April generally offering the clearest water for diving and snorkelling. The southwest monsoon runs roughly from May to September, bringing heavy rain and rougher seas that curtail most boat-based activity. December and January are the busiest months with domestic tourists, so shoulder months like November or April can offer calmer anchorages with similar weather.

Veer Savarkar International Airport (IXZ) sits on the edge of Port Blair, the territory’s capital, with direct flights from Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and other major Indian cities. It is the only real gateway to the islands for international and domestic visitors alike, since no other airport in the archipelago handles regular commercial traffic. From Port Blair, onward travel to islands such as Swaraj Dweep or Shaheed Dweep is by government ferry or private cruise boat.

Port Blair’s harbour is the main hub for provisioning and clearance, while Swaraj Dweep, the island once called Havelock, offers the best combination of shelter and access to Radhanagar Beach. Shaheed Dweep, formerly Neil Island, is quieter still, with a handful of sheltered coves suited to a slower stop. Further north, Baratang Island’s mangrove-lined channel gives a very different, more remote overnight option away from the main tourist circuit.

A week is generally the minimum to do the islands justice, given how spread out they are and how much travel time ferries between them can take. That allows two or three nights around Port Blair and the Cellular Jail, two or three more on Swaraj Dweep for Radhanagar Beach and diving, and a day or two further afield at Shaheed Dweep or Baratang. Guests with two weeks can reach quieter, less-visited islands further north such as Diglipur.

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to visit the Andaman Islands, issued on arrival at Port Blair’s airport or seaport and typically valid for 30 days, and certain islands remain entirely off-limits to protect indigenous communities and fragile habitats. Indian citizens face fewer restrictions but still need permission for a handful of protected zones. Charter guests should confirm current permit requirements and any island-specific restrictions with their operator well before arrival, since rules are enforced strictly.
