Sicily Superyacht Charter

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and one of its most fascinating, a land of ancient temples, dramatic volcanoes and glorious coastline where Greek, Roman, Arab and Norman civilisations have left an extraordinary legacy. For yacht guests it offers a cruising ground of remarkable depth, variety and beauty.

The island’s coastline is a succession of dramatic capes, sheltered bays and clear water, dotted with historic ports and elegant resort towns. Inland lie some of the finest Greek temples in existence, baroque cities, and the brooding presence of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano.

Sicily is also a paradise for lovers of food and wine, with a celebrated cuisine shaped by centuries of diverse influences and vineyards that thrive on volcanic soil. Its surrounding islands, from the Aeolians to the Egadi and Pantelleria, add further riches to any itinerary.

Combining ancient history, dramatic landscapes and outstanding cuisine, Sicily is one of the great destinations of the Mediterranean. Guests can anchor beneath historic towns, explore ancient temples and enjoy the warmth, flavour and beauty of this captivating island.

Sicily Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Sicily, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the ideal season for a Sicily yacht charter?

May, June and September offer the best balance of warm weather, calm seas and manageable crowds, with July and August bringing peak heat and busier anchorages around Taormina and the Aeolian Islands. Water temperatures stay swimmable from late May through October. Spring visits also coincide with Sicily’s wildflower season inland, worth combining with a shore excursion to the Valley of the Temples.

How do guests usually reach a Sicily charter?

Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) is the main gateway for the east coast and Taormina, while Palermo Airport (PMO) serves the north-west and Egadi Islands more directly. Both have regular international connections in season. Guests combining Sicily with the Aeolian Islands or mainland Italy often fly into one and depart from the other, since a one-way itinerary along the coast is straightforward to arrange.

Which anchorages would you recommend for a first Sicily itinerary?

Ortigia, the old island heart of Syracuse, combines a sheltered berth with some of the best Baroque architecture on the island. Cefalù offers calm water beneath its Norman cathedral, and Scopello, on the edge of the Zingaro Nature Reserve, gives access to some of Sicily’s clearest snorkelling. San Vito Lo Capo, at the island’s north-western tip, rounds things out with a long, sheltered beach and a distinctly Arab-influenced old town.

How many days does a Sicily charter typically need?

A week is enough to combine the east coast around Taormina and Syracuse with a day or two among the Aeolian Islands. Guests wanting to add the west coast, Egadi Islands and Palermo comfortably should plan for ten to fourteen days, since Sicily’s coastline runs to well over a thousand kilometres. Shorter four or five day charters work well focused on a single coast rather than circling the island.

Can guests visit Mount Etna's craters during a Sicily charter?

Yes, from an anchorage near Taormina or Catania it’s a straightforward half-day trip. The cable car from Rifugio Sapienza rises to 2,500 metres, and from there a 4×4 and a short guided trek with a volcanological guide can reach around 3,000 metres, close to the summit craters. Access depends on Etna’s activity at the time, since routes are adjusted or closed at short notice when conditions require it, so it’s worth confirming availability shortly before the visit.
