Barbados Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Barbados, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
What's the best time of year to charter around Barbados?

December to April brings the driest weather and calmest seas along the west coast, though the Atlantic-facing east coast stays rougher year-round regardless of season. Crop Over, the island’s biggest festival, runs from June to the first Monday in August, so guests wanting the Grand Kadooment parade as well as good weather should aim for late July. Hurricane season, June to November, rarely brings a direct hit this far south and east in the chain, but swell and rain do increase.

How easy is it to fly into Barbados?

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) sits about 13 kilometres southeast of Bridgetown and takes direct flights from the UK, US, Canada and across the Caribbean, making Barbados one of the more accessible islands in the region for charter guests joining a yacht already in the water. Most itineraries either start or finish here, since Barbados sits somewhat apart from the main Windward and Leeward chains and reaching it typically means a longer open-water crossing than island-hopping elsewhere.

Where should we anchor for a night at Barbados?

Carlisle Bay, right off Bridgetown, is the most popular stop, sheltered enough for a comfortable overnight and close to six accessible wrecks for a morning swim. Holetown and Speightstown further up the Platinum Coast offer calmer water and easier access to restaurants and shops ashore. Port St Charles, a purpose-built marina community near the island’s northwest tip, provides berths and customs clearance for those who prefer a dock over open anchoring.

How many days should a Barbados visit last?

Two to three nights let guests properly split time between the calm western beaches, an inland day at Harrison’s Cave, and an evening at the Oistins fish fry without rushing. Because Barbados sits somewhat isolated from the rest of the Lesser Antilles, many charters treat it as a standalone stop rather than one call within a wider island-hopping route.

Is Barbados still part of the British Commonwealth?

Barbados removed the British monarch as head of state on 30 November 2021, the fifty-fifth anniversary of its 1966 independence, becoming a republic with Dame Sandra Mason sworn in as its first president. It remains a member of the Commonwealth, and the change altered little day to day for visitors: British-style driving on the left, cricket and much of the island’s institutional life continue exactly as before.
