Saint Croix Superyacht Charter

Saint Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands, a beautiful and historic isle lying south of its sisters and offering a distinctive blend of Danish colonial heritage, pristine reefs and unspoilt natural beauty. Quieter and more authentic than the busier islands, it offers a rewarding and characterful Caribbean destination.

The island is famous for its two charming historic towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted, whose beautifully preserved Danish colonial architecture, pastel buildings and old forts reflect a fascinating past. Beyond the towns lie golden beaches, lush rainforest in the west and rolling countryside dotted with historic sugar plantations.

Saint Croix’s surrounding waters are a paradise for divers and snorkellers, with pristine coral reefs, dramatic wall dives and the beautiful protected islet of Buck Island, a national monument ringed by an underwater snorkelling trail. Clear turquoise water and sheltered bays offer superb swimming and anchoring.

Ashore, the island offers celebrated rum, fresh seafood and a warm, unhurried welcome, along with beautiful scenery and rich history. Its blend of heritage and natural beauty is appealing.

With its colonial towns, pristine reefs and unspoilt beaches, Saint Croix is a distinctive jewel of the US Virgin Islands. Guests can explore historic Danish streets, snorkel protected reefs and enjoy the authentic charm and natural beauty of this beautiful island.

Saint Croix Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Saint Croix, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time to charter around Saint Croix?

December through April brings the driest weather and the steadiest trade winds, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk concentrated in August and September. Hurricane Hugo struck St Croix directly in 1989, a reminder that the island’s position south of the main Virgin Islands chain offers no real shelter from a major storm. May and early June often combine warm, settled seas with noticeably quieter anchorages before the summer crowds and storm risk both increase.

What's the easiest way to fly in to Saint Croix?

Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX), near Christiansted, is the only airport on the island and receives direct flights from several mainland US cities as well as frequent connections through San Juan, Puerto Rico. A ferry also links St Croix with St Thomas, though the crossing takes around two and a half hours across open water, considerably longer and rougher than the short hops between St Thomas, St John and the BVI further north.

Which anchorage works best for an overnight stop at Saint Croix?

Christiansted Harbour, protected by an offshore reef and a scatter of small cays, puts guests within walking distance of the fort and the town’s restaurants. Salt River Bay, on the north shore, offers a quieter, more sheltered alternative inside a designated national historical park, though facilities ashore are minimal. Frederiksted’s pier suits a shorter stop for dinner in town, since the anchorage itself lies more open to swell from the west.

How many days should a Saint Croix stop last?

Two to three nights allow time to explore Christiansted’s fort and Steeple Building, snorkel Buck Island’s underwater trail, and still fit in a quieter afternoon at Cane Bay or Sandy Point. As the largest and most southerly of the US Virgin Islands, St Croix sits a little apart from the busier St Thomas to St John route, so many charter guests treat it as a standalone few days rather than a single stop on a longer island-hopping itinerary.

What's the story behind St Croix's Emancipation Day?

On 3 July 1848, enslaved people on St Croix gathered at Fort Frederik in Frederiksted under the leadership of Moses ‘General Buddhoe’ Gottlieb and forced Danish Governor-General Peter von Scholten to proclaim the immediate abolition of slavery across the entire Danish West Indies, a decision he made without royal authorisation. The date is still marked every year across the US Virgin Islands as Emancipation Day, and Fort Frederik’s grounds, now home to a small museum, remain the site most closely tied to that history.
