The most settled weather falls between December and April, when the Bahamas’ dry season keeps humidity low and rainfall rare, though it’s also the busiest and most fashionable stretch, so marina slips and dinner tables book out well ahead. May and June offer a quieter alternative with warm, swimmable water and fewer crowds. Most captains avoid the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, from August through October, when storm risk is highest.
Harbour Island has no airport of its own; the nearest is North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), a short hop from Nassau or Miami, followed by an eight to ten minute taxi to the Three Island Dock and a further water taxi crossing the harbour to Dunmore Town. Many charter guests skip the transfer altogether and simply have their yacht collect them at North Eleuthera or Governor’s Harbour, roughly forty-five minutes further south.
Valentine’s Marina, the island’s largest, offers full facilities and the shortest walk into Dunmore Town, while Romora Bay and the newer Briland Club Marina provide quieter, less trafficked alternatives a little further along the bay. Vessels preferring to anchor rather than take a slip typically pick a spot in the harbour channel known locally as the Bight, sheltered from ocean swell by Harbour Island itself. Government Dock, right in town, suits a short tender-free stop for dinner ashore.
One or two nights suit most itineraries, enough time for a golf-cart tour of Dunmore Town, an afternoon on Pink Sands Beach and dinner at one of Bay Street’s restaurants. Guests who want to properly settle in, rather than just pass through, often stay three nights, splitting the time between the beach, the harbour dive sites and a slower pace ashore. Harbour Island combines easily with wider Eleuthera or the Exumas further south on a longer route.
No, and in practice almost nobody does: golf carts are the standard way to get around, used for everything from grocery runs to dinner reservations, and driving stays on the left in a nod to British colonial rule. Renting one ahead of the December to April high season is worth doing early, since the island’s fleet is limited and carts routinely sell out weeks in advance. The absence of car traffic is part of what keeps Dunmore Town’s narrow lanes so quiet.
