Banda Islands Superyacht Charter

The Banda Islands are one of the most historic and beautiful corners of Indonesia, a remote volcanic archipelago in the heart of the Coral Triangle once famous throughout the world as the fabled Spice Islands. Steeped in history and ringed by pristine reefs, they offer a rare and rewarding blend of culture and untouched natural beauty far from any crowds.

For centuries the only source of nutmeg and mace, the Bandas were fought over by the great powers of Europe, and their fascinating history lingers in colonial forts, mansions and fragrant nutmeg groves. The perfect volcanic cone of Gunung Api rises dramatically from the sea at the heart of the archipelago, a spectacular and iconic sight.

Beneath the water, the Bandas are a diver’s paradise, with pristine coral reefs, dramatic walls and abundant marine life in crystal-clear water, including the famous lava-flow reefs of Gunung Api. Remote and unspoilt, they offer superb diving and snorkelling in profound tranquillity.

Ashore, the islands offer fascinating history, fragrant spice groves and a warm welcome. Their remote beauty is exceptional.

With their volcanic cone, pristine reefs and rich history, the Banda Islands are a remote jewel of Indonesia. Guests can dive spectacular reefs, explore the fascinating heritage of the Spice Islands and experience the untouched beauty of the Coral Triangle.

Banda Islands Charter Guide

Everything you need to know before chartering a yacht in Banda Islands, from the best time to visit to where to drop anchor.
When's the best time of year to charter to the Banda Islands?

The calmest window runs from October to April, before the southeast monsoon picks up and brings stronger winds and swell from May to September. Visibility for diving is typically best from October to March. Since the Bandas sit well east of the main cyclone belt, the bigger factor for planning is sea state for the crossing rather than storm risk.

How do we actually get to the Banda Islands?

Ambon’s Pattimura Airport (AMQ) is the gateway, reached by domestic flights from Jakarta or Makassar. From Ambon, Banda Neira is a further forty minutes by light aircraft on a limited weekly schedule, or five to six hours by fast ferry when seas are calm. Most charters based in the Bandas either embark in Ambon and cruise across, or fly guests in directly to join the yacht already anchored at Banda Neira.

Which islands make the best overnight stops?

Banda Neira offers the only real town, along with the forts and colonial architecture, making it a natural first and last stop. Ay Island and Hatta Island both have calm, clear anchorages well suited to snorkelling, while Run Island rewards a stop as much for its history, once weighed against Manhattan, as for its diving.

How many days should a Banda Islands charter include?

Four to five nights covers Banda Neira’s forts and museums, a Gunung Api climb, and diving or snorkelling around Ay and Hatta at an unhurried pace. Given how remote the islands are, most guests combine this stretch with a wider Maluku or eastern Indonesia itinerary rather than treating Banda as a standalone short break.

What's the story behind Run Island and Manhattan?

Run, one of the smallest Banda Islands, produced enough nutmeg in the seventeenth century to make it fiercely contested between England and the Dutch Republic. Under the 1667 Treaty of Breda that ended the Second Anglo-Dutch War, England formally ceded Run to the Dutch in exchange for keeping Manhattan, which English forces had already seized from Dutch New Amsterdam three years earlier. Run today has around 1,500 residents and little sign of that history beyond a small monument.
