About Otium

Otium is a 48-metre private phinisi, hand-built in the Indonesian tradition from ironwood and teak, and she is a yacht of Indonesia rather than simply a yacht in it. She was shaped by the archipelago she works – by its boatbuilding heritage, its timber, and the slow rhythm of moving between remote islands – and she carries that character quietly, in craftsmanship rather than display.

She takes twelve guests across six suites, with flexible arrangements for up to fourteen, looked after by a crew of fifteen. That is a remarkable ratio, and it is the point of a yacht like this: a phinisi charter is a fully hosted expedition, not a self-drive holiday. The owner”s suite sits on the main deck with a king bed, a private lounge and panoramic sea views; a queen suite occupies the upper deck; and further deluxe staterooms – Coral and Sand among them – lie on the lower deck, with a twin bunk cabin alongside for children or a nanny. The joinery throughout is warm carved timber, lattice and brass, finished with a contemporary European hand.

Where she comes into her own is the water. Otium is set up as a serious dive and exploration platform: two dive compressors with a dryer and a Nitrox membrane system aboard, tenders for reefs and beaches, and a crew who build the days around what the guests want – diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding, island walks, or nothing at all. Starlink and satellite communications keep her connected even in the most remote anchorages, for those who want it.

Her cruising grounds are the best that Indonesia offers. Komodo National Park, with its dragons, pink beaches and Padar”s ridgelines; Alor and Sumbawa; the historic Spice Islands; and Raja Ampat, the richest reef system on earth. She moves slowly and deliberately – a Yanmar 600 gives her a nine-knot cruise – because these are places to be travelled through, not past. A typical voyage runs five to seven nights or more, long enough for the pace of island life to take over.

Dining is chef-led and rooted in place, Indonesian flavours meeting Western technique, served wherever the day ends up – on deck under the rig, on a beach the crew have set up, or at anchor as the light goes. Hybrid solar-supported power keeps her quiet and light on the environments she visits.

Otium charters from USD 14,000 per night, with five to seven nights the recommended minimum, across Komodo, Alor, Sumbawa, the Spice Islands and Raja Ampat. For a group that wants Indonesia at its most remote and most comfortable – handmade, unhurried, and genuinely of the sea – she is a rare thing.
