Eighteen classic yachts charter in the fifty metre band, spanning eight decades of design and construction. The term covers a broad range, from the motor yacht Malahne, launched in 1937 and fully restored since, to traditional Indonesian phinisis like Silolona and Amandira, and to sailing yachts such as ALMYRA II, a Perini Navi from the mid nineties. What unites them is craftsmanship that predates the current generation of superyachts, and a character that production builds cannot replicate.
These are yachts with teak decks, varnished woodwork and proportions from an era when naval architecture followed different rules. Cabins tend to be more numerous and more intimate than modern equivalents, with five to seven staterooms sleeping ten to twelve guests. Crews run from eight to fourteen depending on the yacht, its rig and the level of service the owner has established.
Weekly charter rates start at eighty five thousand euros and reach one hundred and ninety five thousand for the most sought after hulls. The median falls around one hundred and thirty five thousand, well below the fifty metre average for modern yachts. Add an advance provisioning allowance of roughly thirty percent for fuel, food, berthing and drinks. The lower rate reflects age and systems rather than quality of experience.
Most of these yachts work the eastern Mediterranean, with Greece, the Dodecanese and the Turkish coast as their primary grounds. Several cross to the Caribbean for winter.
