Warderick Wells Cay is the administrative headquarters of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, and it happens to be one of the most compelling destinations in the Bahamas for families chartering a yacht. The protected waters of the park, the shallow sand flats, the nurse sharks visible from the boat, and the nature trails above the cays give children genuinely educational time on the water without any of the crowds that follow resort beaches. Family charter yachts in the Exumas range from compact 25-metre catamarans carrying eight guests to full-displacement motor yachts capable of housing twelve in five or six cabins, each with an en-suite bathroom. From the mooring fields at Warderick Wells, families can dinghy to Boo Boo Hill, a short but rewarding climb with sweeping views over the cays. The coral heads in the South Mooring Field shelter spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays in water clear enough to see the bottom at six metres. Nearby Compass Cay is known for its resident nurse sharks, which can be observed in shallow water, a highlight for children of all ages. Staniel Cay, a short day’s run south, adds the famous Thunderball Grotto cave snorkel and the swimming pigs of Pig Beach.
