The Ionian Islands are widely considered the most accessible sailing grounds in Greece for newcomers and experienced sailors alike: the summer winds are lighter and more predictable than the Cyclades’ meltemi, the passages between islands are short, and the anchorages are sheltered and calm. Zakhyntos, the southernmost of the main Ionian group, benefits from thermal breezes in the afternoons, particularly on the island’s west coast, offering enjoyable sailing without the force that sometimes makes the Cyclades challenging.
The sailing fleet in the Ionian runs from 20-metre traditional gulets to 50-metre sailing superyachts. Most crewed sailing yachts in this range carry six to ten guests across four to six cabins, with generous cockpit space for outdoor living and dining. Traditional Greek gulets, with their broad beams and comfortable cockpit arrangement, are particularly well suited to the Ionian.
Charter rates for sailing yachts at Zakhyntos begin around 20,000 euros per week and reach 215,000 euros for the larger sailing superyachts. An advance provisioning allowance of 30 percent covers food, fuel, berths, and drinks. The Ionian season runs effectively from May to October, with July and August the busiest months; June and September are frequently preferred by experienced charter guests who prioritise anchorage quality over peak-season atmosphere.
