November through May brings the driest, calmest weather and the most reliable sight-fishing on the flats, before summer’s heat and humidity set in. Winter also draws the bulk of the marlin and tuna fishing traffic to Chub Cay, so slips there can book up around the holidays. Hurricane season runs June through November, with risk concentrated from August through October, when many captains prefer to be based further from these relatively exposed, low-lying cays.
Great Harbour Cay Airport (GHC) and Chub Cay International Airport (CCZ) are the chain’s two gateways, both reachable from Nassau or Fort Lauderdale in under an hour and mainly served by charter and private flights rather than scheduled airlines. There’s no public ferry service linking the Berry Islands to Nassau, so almost every visitor arrives either by private plane or already aboard a boat, making the islands better suited to charter guests than independent travellers.
Great Harbour Cay Marina, on the north end of the chain, offers the most complete shore facilities, close to the beach and the golf course. Chub Cay Marina, at the southern tip, suits anglers heading straight out to the Tongue of the Ocean and has long been the chain’s serious fishing base. Between the two, Frazer’s Hog Cay and Bond’s Cay offer quieter, undeveloped anchorages for a night away from any settlement at all.
Two to three nights let guests combine a day at Great Harbour Cay’s beach and golf course with a cliff-jump at Hoffman’s Cay Blue Hole and a day of fishing out of Chub Cay. Because the chain has so little in the way of towns or provisioning beyond its two small marinas, most itineraries treat the Berry Islands as a scenic, fish-rich link between Nassau and the Abacos or Grand Bahama rather than a standalone week-long base.
It essentially is one. Developers laid out a marina, an airstrip, a nine-hole golf course and rows of villas in the 1960s, briefly drawing Hollywood names such as Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Brigitte Bardot along with members of the Rat Pack. The Sugar Beach Hotel, once the social centre of the development, closed and now sits abandoned, though the marina, golf course and a scatter of private homes still operate. The result is a quiet, faded glamour rather than a working resort town.
