The Cyclades season runs May to October. July and August bring the busiest anchorages and the strongest meltemi winds, so June and September are often better for cruising, with settled weather, warmer water and far more room at anchor off Manganari or Tris Klises. Chora’s bars stay lively from June through September, so travellers chasing a quieter island are better served outside that window.
Guests typically fly into Santorini, under an hour from Athens with frequent summer connections, then take a high-speed ferry across to Ios in around an hour, or a conventional ferry in two to three. Athens’s ports of Piraeus and Rafina also run direct ferry services to Ios, useful for charters starting or ending in the capital rather than on Santorini.
Manganari, on the south coast, is the most sheltered option and works well in the meltemi thanks to its sandy bottom and several linked coves. Tris Klises to the southeast has a lively reef just offshore for snorkelling, while Trypiti on the southwest coast sees very few other boats. Agia Theodotis, in the northeast, is calm and scenic but should be avoided when the wind swings northeast.
Two to three days lets guests combine a night at anchor off Chora, a full day exploring Manganari or Tris Klises, and time ashore for Homer’s Tomb and the Skarkos ruins. Ios also sits conveniently between Santorini, Naxos and Paros, so many charters use it as a stopover of a night or two rather than a standalone base for the whole trip.
Ios earned that reputation decades ago, and Chora still has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in the Cyclades in July and August, with bars clustered along its narrow lanes. Outside peak summer, though, the island is considerably quieter, and even in season the south coast beaches and anchorages like Manganari and Trypiti stay calm, so the two sides of Ios can be chosen almost independently.
