Late May through September gives the most reliable sailing weather, with July and August also the busiest months in Skiathos Town’s harbour bars. The Meltemi can build from the north in high summer, though its effect here is gentler than further south in the Aegean thanks to the shelter of neighbouring islets. June and September combine warm water with quieter anchorages and considerably lighter boat traffic around Koukounaries.
Skiathos has its own airport, Alexandros Papadiamantis (JSI), just two kilometres from the town and harbour, so the transfer to a waiting yacht takes only a few minutes. It receives direct flights from Athens year round plus seasonal charters from the UK and other parts of Europe through summer. Skiathos also functions as the main gateway for guests continuing on to Skopelos or Alonissos by ferry or tender.
Vromolimnos, on the island’s southern coast, is a reliable choice, sheltered and close enough to swim ashore for dinner at one of its beach tavernas. Aselinos, a little further along, offers a quieter alternative with clearer water and fewer day boats by evening. In a strong Meltemi, Kanapitsa on the more protected eastern side gives useful shelter when the southern coves pick up swell.
One to two nights suit most itineraries, enough time to swim at Koukounaries, walk out to the ruins of Kastro and enjoy an evening in Skiathos Town. As the gateway to the Sporades, Skiathos works well as the start or end point of a longer route that also takes in Skopelos and Alonissos, both under two hours away by boat.
Yes, though its role is smaller than neighbouring Skopelos, where the wedding chapel and beach scenes were filmed. Skiathos’s Old Port and the narrow lanes behind it appear in the film’s arrival and chase sequences, and a rooftop near Agios Nikolaos church features in an early scene. The main filming locations, including Kastani and Agios Ioannis chapel, lie a short sail away on Skopelos.
