The Adriatic season runs April to October, with July and August bringing the busiest berths at Porto Montenegro and along the Budva waterfront. June and September keep the water warm enough for swimming while easing the pressure on marina space, and are generally a better fit for exploring both the Bay of Kotor and the open coast in the same trip.
Tivat Airport (TIV) sits right on the Bay of Kotor, about seven kilometres from Kotor itself, making it the fastest way in if your charter starts inside the bay. Podgorica Airport (TGD), roughly 85 kilometres and an hour and a half’s drive from Kotor, carries more international routes and suits itineraries beginning further south along the open coast.
Porto Montenegro in Tivat is the standard base for provisioning and crew changes, with the sheltered waters of the Bay of Kotor beyond it offering some of the calmest sailing on this stretch of coast. On the open Adriatic side, Petrovac Bay and the waters off Sveti Stefan give a different, more exposed character, with Ulcinj’s Velika Plaža further south staying quiet even at the height of summer.
A week is enough to combine two or three days inside the Bay of Kotor with a run down the open coast to Budva, Petrovac and Sveti Stefan. Shorter charters of three to four days generally do better focused on the bay alone, since its scale rewards a slower pace, while the open coast suits a faster point-to-point itinerary.
The bay and the open Budva Riviera feel like two different countries: the bay is sheltered, mountain-walled water with short hops between towns, while the coast south of Budva is more exposed, with longer beaches and a livelier resort scene around Sveti Stefan and Petrovac. Most first-time charters lean toward the bay for its scenery and easy sailing, saving the open coast for a return trip focused on beach time.
