Koh Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand side of the country, so its seasons run opposite to Phuket and the Andaman coast. The dry season runs roughly December to May, with February and March the sunniest, calmest months for cruising. June to September brings intermittent rain but generally manageable seas, while October and November are the wettest months, making Koh Samui a useful alternative base when Andaman ports are closed.
02
Samui International Airport, code USM, sits about two kilometres north of Chaweng, close enough that most charters can be aboard within twenty minutes of landing. Bangkok Airways built and still largely operates the airport, running frequent flights from Bangkok alongside services from Scoot and Berjaya Air. There are no low-cost long-haul routes, so most international guests connect through Bangkok’s main airports first.
03
Choice of anchorage on Koh Samui shifts with the season. Chaweng and Choeng Mon, on the east coast, are calm and popular through the dry months, while Maenam and Taling Ngam, facing west, offer better shelter if a squall rolls in from October to December. Bophut Bay works well year-round and puts Fisherman’s Village’s restaurants and market within easy tender range of the anchorage.
04
Two to three days is enough to enjoy Koh Samui’s beaches, dine in Fisherman’s Village and make a day trip out to Ang Thong National Marine Park. Guests building a longer Gulf of Thailand itinerary often use Koh Samui as a base and add on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, turning the same waters into a week or more of contrasting island cruising without long open-water passages.
05
The Samui Regatta runs its 23rd edition from 23 to 30 May 2026, hosted off Chaweng Beach since the island has no marina of its own. Racing has taken place every year since 2001, growing from a small fleet of beach catamarans into the only multi-class regatta in the Gulf of Thailand. A charter timed around the regatta puts guests close to the fleet and the shoreside parties that follow each day’s racing.
