The tradition runs through the aluminium expedition builders in particular. Hulls drawn for high latitude and ocean voyaging carry their volume low, accept weight without penalty and are engineered with watertight bulkheads, lifting keels and integral tanks. These are boats designed to be loaded with six months of stores and taken somewhere with no support.
Displacement also survives at the heavier end of the production and semi custom market, in centre cockpit cruisers and long distance designs where tankage, ground tackle and systems matter more than a knot of boat speed. The motion is the payoff, since a displacement hull rolls slowly and deeply, heaves to well and lets a short handed crew rest. At survey the priorities are structural, covering the keel joint and floors, rudder stock and bearings, chainplate landings, and on aluminium hulls the welds, anodes and any electrolysis around fittings.
