A waterslide is the least serious item on any specification sheet and, on a charter with children aboard, frequently the most used. It answers the question every parent faces around day three, when the novelty of the tender has worn off and the group needs something that occupies itself.
The fleet carries two quite different things under the same word. Inflatable slides rig from the sun deck or upper deck down to the water in about twenty minutes and pack away for passage, which is why they are the more common option and why they appear on yachts from around thirty metres. Built-in slides, moulded into the superstructure and often spiralling down from an upper deck, are rarer, more spectacular and confined to larger recent builds. A few yachts carry both.
What matters practically is the drop height, the landing area and whether the crew are happy to rig it daily. A good crew will have the slide out before breakfast and the inflatable park assembled alongside it, with a trampoline, a climbing wall and floating mats making a swimming area that keeps a mixed-age group busy from mid-morning until the light goes.
