The sailing season runs from May to October, with July and August the warmest but also the windiest, as the meltemi can bring strong northerly gusts through the Cyclades. Many yacht guests prefer June or September, when the sea is calm, the light is soft for the cliffside walk to Panagia, and Chora’s squares are far less crowded than at the height of summer.
The closest airport is on Santorini, under an hour’s flying time from Athens with daily connections in season. From there guests take a high-speed ferry to Karavostasis, Folegandros’s small port, a crossing of one to three hours depending on the vessel. Many charters simply arrange to embark directly in Santorini and sail across, saving the ferry transfer entirely.
Karavostasis, the main port, offers reliable holding and easy access to Chora by taxi or the local bus. For something quieter, Agkali Bay and the neighbouring cove of Livadaki both offer good shelter and calm swimming, while Katergo, tucked beneath high cliffs on the south coast, is reachable only by tender or a short hiking trail, keeping it one of the least crowded anchorages on the island.
Two nights at anchor is generally enough to take in Chora, the Kastro and Ano Meria without feeling rushed, plus a full day for the beaches at Agkali, Livadaki and Katergo. Folegandros rewards a slower pace better than most Cycladic islands, since much of its character lies in the walk between villages rather than in any single sight, so charters combining it with Milos or Santorini often stretch it to three.
Very much so. A network of old stone paths, once used by donkeys moving goods between villages, still connects Chora, Ano Meria and the coast, and many are now waymarked for walkers. The most rewarding is the roughly fifteen-minute climb from Pounda Square to the church of Panagia, which opens onto a sweeping view over Chora and the sea. Sturdy shoes are worth packing even for a short stay.
