A fifty metre sailing yacht is a rarer thing than its motor equivalent. Of the one hundred and twenty two yachts at this length in our charter fleet, only sixteen carry a rig, and most are effectively one offs. These are boats built for owners who wanted to cross oceans under sail and accepted the engineering that demands.
Perini Navi accounts for the largest share, with ketch and sloop rigs whose captive winches let eight crew handle sail plans that would once have needed thirty. Alloy Yachts and Fitzroy built the lighter New Zealand hulls, quicker and more sport minded, and names such as Parsifal III and Hyperion charter here. At the other end are the Indonesian phinisi, Silolona and Amandira, timber built and slow in the best sense.
Weekly rates run from around one hundred thousand euros to one hundred and ninety five thousand, with the median close to one hundred and fifty five thousand. The most modest hulls charter near eighty five thousand and the largest reach two hundred and forty five. An advance provisioning allowance of about thirty percent applies, though fuel takes a far smaller share of it than on a motor yacht.
Sail rewards passages rather than day hops. The Tyrrhenian and the Aegean suit these yachts in summer, with long reaches between Sardinia, Sicily and the Ionian islands. Winter takes the Perinis and the Alloys to the Grenadines and the British Virgin Islands, while the phinisi work Raja Ampat and Komodo year round. Tell us your dates and we will send a shortlist.
