A helipad on a motor yacht draws the line between a large charter and a vessel that works as a private destination. Twenty nine motor yachts in our charter fleet carry one, starting at forty two metres and running to Octopus at one hundred and twenty six metres. At the smaller end the pad doubles as deck space when the helicopter is not aboard. On the larger hulls it is permanent, with aviation lighting, fuel systems and in some cases a dedicated hangar.
The practical gain is speed. A helicopter transfers guests from an international airport to the yacht in under an hour, wherever she sits at anchor. This opens itineraries that would otherwise lose a full day to road and tender travel, and it allows guests to arrive and depart on different schedules without the yacht repositioning to a commercial port.
The fleet draws from Lurssen, Feadship, Oceanco, Golden Yachts, Amels and Admiral among others. Most take twelve guests across six or seven cabins with crews of eighteen to forty five. Alongside the helipad, nearly every yacht in this group adds a cinema, gym and beach club.
Weekly rates begin at one hundred and eighty thousand euros for Lady Trudy and Miss Michelle, both in the forty metre range. The median sits at six hundred thousand. At the top end, Kismet and Renaissance each charter at three million per week. Add an advance provisioning allowance of roughly thirty percent covering fuel, food, berthing and drinks.
