The two work together more closely than they appear to. A displacement hull carries the weight of a proper marine diesel low and amidships without complaint, where a light planing hull would suffer. Fixed tanks of real capacity fit under the sole rather than in the cockpit, giving a motoring range measured in hundreds of miles. The propeller sits deep in undisturbed water behind a substantial keel, so it bites in a seaway instead of ventilating.
For the crew the consequence is autonomy. The alternator runs the refrigeration, the watermaker and the electronics, the engine drives you off a lee shore or through a windless week, and the yacht keeps its trim whether the tanks are full or empty.
