Mayaguana is one of the most remote islands in the Bahamas, lying at the far southeastern tip of the archipelago close to the Turks and Caicos border. The island sees fewer yacht visitors than almost any other in the chain, making it an exceptional destination for a crew seeking complete solitude. A motor yacht with good range reaches Mayaguana on a long day passage from Nassau or in a shorter run from Long Island, and the calm water of Abraham Bay provides a sheltered anchorage for the duration of the stay.
The charter motor fleet in the Bahamas numbers more than 160 published yachts from yards including Benetti, Feadship, Heesen, Amels and Trinity, ranging from 24 to over 80 metres. Mayaguana requires a yacht with adequate range and provisions for a fully self-sufficient stay. The anchorage at Abraham Bay handles vessels of moderate size comfortably, with good holding over sand in calm water.
Weekly rates for Bahamas motor charters begin at around 50,000 euros for a smaller vessel and reach 600,000 euros or more for a flagship over 70 metres. An advance provisioning allowance of approximately 30 percent covers fuel, food, berthing and drinks. Mayaguana has no provisioning facilities, no marina and no fuel dock, so complete self-sufficiency before departure is essential.
Abraham Bay on the south coast is the main anchorage, wide and well-sheltered with good holding over sand. Booby Cay off the northwest coast offers exceptional snorkelling and diving on almost entirely pristine reef. From Mayaguana, a yacht can cross to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos in under a day.
